“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV)

Paul wraps up his iconic chapter on love (1 Corinthians 13 – read the whole chapter HERE) with these words. The greatest is love. Earlier he wrote that love never fails. It’s important to understand that Paul is talking about agape love, gift love. It’s love that is given unconditionally, whether it receives love in return or not. It’s not friendship love or physical love or brotherly love, all of which have their place. But the love that simply does not fail is the love God has for us. The love Jesus showed us on the cross. Gift love.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to embrace and embody agape love for one another. The only way we can do that is by drawing very near to God and his agape love for us. When we do, he continually fills our love tank which gives us what we need to love other people.

If you’re struggling to love someone in your life, draw near to God. You can’t give what you don’t have.
