Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

These verses from Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth are both encouraging and challenging. It’s encouraging and empowering to know that God’s very Spirit resides in his people. It’s one of the incredible things we see in the New Testament when people are baptized into Christ Jesus, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Stop and consider for just a moment that God’s presence takes up residence in your being. No wonder the Bible talks about the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us. That is the encouraging part.

The part we find challenging is the “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” part. If that doesn’t fly in the opposite direction of what our culture teaches us, I don’t know what does. Just sit in this reality this week. You aren’t your own. The buck doesn’t stop with you, what you think about things, how you feel about things… your passions, your wants, your needs. It’s not about you. God purchased you at the price of his beloved Son. Paul says our response is to honor God with all of ourselves.
